Employee Spotlight:

Joan Broughton returned to Evergreen Business Capital in January of 2011 after a three year re-emersion in community banking during these challenging times.  From 2002-2007, she was the top producer at Evergreen following a 30-year career in banking, beginning as a management trainee at Seafirst Bank in 1974.

Joan is a Seattle native, University of Washington graduate and completed Pacific Coast Banking School in 1988 where her thesis was chosen to be included in the permanent library. Her banking career spanned markets from Branch Management to Business Banking to Corporate, Middle Market relationship management.

In addition, Joan stepped out of banking to own, successfully operate and sell her own small business. This experience made her a better banker and developed in Joan a profound respect for entrepreneurs.

She believes strongly in the value of the SBA 504 program and enjoys working both with seasoned lending partners and assisting those who have not yet learned about the value and power of the program. It is her goal to make the SBA 504 process easy for her borrowers and lending partners and to have all of the lenders in her marketing area enthusiastically present the 504 program with all other alternatives so that the borrower can make the best possible personal choice.

What brought you back to Evergreen?

I missed the satisfying, fast-paced and always challenging work. I have high regard for the staff, the lenders, the diverse business owners, and all of the other people we work with as a result of facilitating this SBA program;  SBDC and SCORE counselors, other alternative lenders, Municipal Economic Development professionals, CPAs, Commercial Real Estate Brokers, to name a few. After many years as a commercial banker, I understand the requirements, pressures and focus of our lending partners. I enjoy helping them find solutions and getting to completion of each project funding.

If you were to start your own small business, what would it be?

I started, successfully ran and sold a small business many years ago. It was fun, exciting, challenging work and taught me valuable lessons about the world I work with and support now. I suppose that my fantasy would be to build a business in freelance travel writing, addressing my love for travel and curiosity about our diverse and fascinating planet and all of its cultures.

Joan Broughton is described by her co-workers:

I have a lot of admiration for Joan. She works hard to help make her clients' dreams come true too. Her knowledge and experience has made her a great resource for me in talking over deals.

I really enjoy working with Joan.  She is great to work with, communicates real time and is a great team player.

Joan is an expert in the 504 program, knows how to simplify the process for lenders and borrowers and minimize surprises along the way.

Part of the benefit of working at Evergreen is the wealth of knowledge our experienced staff has to offer. Joan is definitely one of those resources. Her bankers and borrowers are well-served by her expertise, her ability to anticipate their needs and respond to their concerns.
